The DeSoto ISD Council of PTAs sponsored five art students to receive training on the art of face-painting. Students received a painting kit and training from an artist and face painter who has more than 20 years of service and specializes in children’s events.

One of the students who participated in the effort, DeSoto High School junior Madisyn Alberty, who currently studies graphic art and design, said the opportunity allowed her to pursue a different artform and created an avenue for her to showcase her skills and talents. Following the experience, Alberty plans to continue honing her skills as a face painter.

Alberty joined her DHS Advanced Art peers sophomore Tati Hazel, freshman Natalie Rodriguez, and Early College High School scholar Andrell Fisher for the two-day training which took place at the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce and gave students a foundation on which to properly begin their own face-painting business earning an estimated $50-$150 per hour based on experience.

Each student artist was selected by the DHS Advanced Arts program and received a full face painting kit as part of the initiative.

The effort was sponsored by a $900 donation courtesy of the district’s PTA Council to encourage student entrepreneurship.

“This was a great pathway for students to build a business upon or on which to supplement income utilizing their artistic talents and skills as they transition into college and adulthood. It was important to the PTA Council to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in our students,” said PTA Council President Michelle Carter-Pope. “Since these students are already talented artists, teaching them the art of face painting will show them how to use their craft to start a small business.”
