DeSoto Independent School District (ISD) is proud to celebrate Texas Public Schools Week, an observance that recognizes the critical role public schools play in shaping the futures of students, families, and communities across the state. This week provides an opportunity to reflect on the district’s recent achievements and ongoing commitment to preparing scholars for success beyond graduation.

DeSoto ISD has maintained a strategic focus on expanding opportunity, strengthening outcomes, and preparing the district for the future, emphasizing that all scholars should be academically prepared, access-driven, and advantage-ready.

Among the district’s key initiatives was the reopening of the Amber Terrace Early Childhood Learning Center in 2022, a community-favored campus serving three- and four-year-old scholars. This step restored access to high-quality early learning and reinforced the district’s commitment to building strong academic foundations from the earliest years and is aligned to the board’s goals associated with emphasis on early learning goals focused on strong foundation reading and math skills.

A hallmark of DeSoto ISD’s work is the Triple-A Experience, a comprehensive framework integrating Academics, Arts, and Athletics, designed to ensure equitable access, high expectations, and long-term advantage for every student.

Academic Advancement

DeSoto ISD’s academic progress is reflected in its 2025 Texas Education Agency (TEA) accountability rating of C, with DeSoto High School earning a B and multiple elementary and middle schools posting notable gains. Preliminary STAAR and End-of-Course results demonstrate significant growth, including:

  • 12-point increase in third-grade reading

  • 16-point increase in third-grade math

  • County-leading five-point gain in English II

  • Sustained growth in Algebra I, Biology, English I, and U.S. History

College, Career, and Military Readiness outcomes have also strengthened through expanded advanced coursework, industry certifications, Early College High School pathways, and P-TECH programming, resulting in a high school graduation rate increase of more than 20 percent.

Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy exemplifies this success, earning recognition on the 2025 Texas Honor Roll, ranking among the top 40% of Texas elementary and middle schools by U.S. News & World Report, and being named a 2024 Dr. Jay Cummings Demonstration School by TABSE for closing academic gaps.

Expanding Programs and Opportunities

The district has redefined its choice portfolio by establishing a Talented and Gifted Academy, strengthening fine arts programs, revitalizing middle school leadership initiatives, and expanding pathways to college, career, and military readiness. Innovation and STEM education have advanced through $2 million in grants and partnerships, while arts programs received national recognition from the GRAMMY Foundation. Athletics programs have been strengthened, yielding multiple state championships and reinforcing holistic student development.

Organizational and Community Advancements

Operational and administrative structures have been streamlined to support evolving needs, while teacher support and professional learning programs—such as the Assistant Principals Academy and Teacher-in-Residence program—have bolstered instructional excellence and talent development.

The district has also elevated customer service and community engagement, implementing the Eagle PRIDE initiative to establish districtwide service standards and foster a culture rooted in Purpose, Results, Integrity, Determination, Excellence, and Empathy. These efforts have strengthened relationships with families and stakeholders and reinforced accountability and high expectations.

Strategic investments in marketing and communications have improved clarity, transparency, and accessibility of district initiatives, reducing student attrition from 16% to 2% in a single year.

In a milestone achievement, DeSoto ISD launched its first bond program in more than 20 years, securing $199 million for modernization, expanded learning environments, and equitable access through extensive community engagement and a 70% voter approval rate.

Celebrating Public Education

Texas Public Schools Week provides an opportunity to honor the dedicated educators, staff, families, and students who drive DeSoto ISD’s success. “This week allows us to celebrate the transformative power of public education and the commitment of our entire DeSoto ISD community to providing students with opportunities, skills, and support to thrive,” said Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones, Chief Communications Officer for DeSoto ISD.

Through intentional investments in academics, arts, athletics, innovation, and community engagement, DeSoto ISD continues to set a standard for excellence and ensure every scholar is prepared for success today—and in the future.
