TSU Scholarships Fall 2021In DeSoto ISD seniors are already preparing for their post-secondary futures by completing college applications, applying for scholarships, and ensuring they are academically prepared for success. The proactive efforts of two DeSoto High School (DHS) seniors, KeJuan Barnett and Kristine Uzoigwe, saw instant rewards as they were surprised with four-year scholarship offers by Texas Southern University during a visit with TSU Executive Director of Outreach Services Brian Armstrong.

“The students applied and we saw their transcripts and were immediately impressed. We said that we can not leave DeSoto without awarding scholarships to these students today,” said Armstrong.

DHS senior Kristine Uzoigwe received the TSU Genesis Scholarship which equals more than $25,000 over the next four years.

“It feels amazing to receive this scholarship. I am really glad because it will make my mom happy. She knows that I am going to college and it will feel good to not have to pay for everything.” said Uzoigwe, who plans to major in biology.

DHS senior KeJuan Barnett received the Regents Scholarship which is the highest award offered by TSU and equals over $55,000 for the next four years.

“All the hard work that I did is finally paying off” began Barnett who is a high-performing DHS student who plays baseball and plans to major in biology due to his consideration of becoming a doctor. “I will continue to work hard. I am not done yet.”

DeSoto ISD is one of six school districts in the Dallas Fort Worth area that Texas Southern  University has pledged to provide an additional $1 million scholarship dollars to ensure that students have access to higher education.

LETS GEAR UP Director Robin Johnson Ford accented the event and reminded all the student attendees to reach out for support to prepare for their post-secondary goals.

“We are all here to help you graduate with a plan for your future. Please go to the college center and make an appointment. We will help you with applications, scholarships, and completing your FAFSA. Your counselors are here for you. You are the reason that we are here.”

DHS Class of 2017 alumna Ky Angela Manning who recently graduated from Texas Southern University attended the recruiting event and spoke to the fact that, for her, the university felt like home and encouraged current DHS students to follow in her footsteps.
