The DeSoto ISD Libraries and school campuses are celebrating National Reading Month throughout March and recently observed Read Across America.

The National Education Association designated Read Across America Week as the first week of March in 1998 to promote a love of reading in school-aged children. The month-long set of activities was also initiated to motivate Americans of all ages to enjoy the benefits of reading every day.

The DeSoto ISD Libraries invited students and families to have a daily celebration of reading complete with various celebrations and events:

From Monday through Friday, there were activities such as:

  • Monday - Reading is Amazing (Dress in your favorite outfit that makes you YOU!)
  • Tuesday - Reading is for Sharing (Bring your favorite book to share or dress up as a character from your favorite book
  • Wednesday - Reading is for Relaxing (Wear comfy clothes to read in)
  • Thursday - Reading is Active (Dress up to be active)
  • Friday - Reading Gives Us Superpowers (Dress up as your favorite superhero).

District campuses focus on reading with literacy read-ins, book talks, literacy parades, even hosting family literacy events.

The Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy campus hosted weeklong guest reading events comprised of community and district leaders who came in person or virtually to read and discuss books with students in various grade levels. The campus students also held a literacy parade in which students and teachers dressed in literacy-based costumes with books in hand chanting “we love books,” as they walked the campus. KJTMA also held a parent literacy night full of activities that align with reading, comprehension, critical thinking, and fluency.

The DeSoto ISD Libraries are continuing this district-wide focus on reading each week during the month of March with these focus days:

  • Meet a Book Monday students are introduced to books through book trailers
  • Word Weaver Wednesday students can listen to authors speak about their craft and their books.
  • First Chapter Friday students can listen to the first chapter of a book read by DeISD librarians.

The DeSoto ISD also has compiled a plethora of activities for students, staff and their families to access anytime and anywhere and before, during and after school to encourage reading, listening and continuous learning.
