Congratulations to the McCowan Middle School Boys Choir for receiving a Superior rating at the Region 20 UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation.

On Thursday, March 23rd, the Boys Choir, under the direction of Mr. Jamal Walker, traveled to Red Oak High School to perform for a panel of judges. Overall, the choir received “Superior” ratings on stage, an accomplishment McCowan has not seen since 2017.

Mr. Walker began the year setting a goal to provide a safe space for our young men to be able to creatively express themselves. "Establishing a boys choir this year has been a struggle," said Mr. Walker, "but they started to buy in and really enjoy making music."

The choir received written comments along with their ratings from three judges. Their outstanding performance on stage earned them a Division 1 trophy, which they are able to proudly display on the walls of Curtistene S. McCowan Middle cementing their legacy of excellence in the arts.

Mr. Walker would like to thank the campus and district administration, all supporting staff at McCowan and DeSoto High School, the wonderful parents, and the many talented students. The young men at McCowan Middle School have demonstrated what one can accomplish combining dedication, discipline, and grit to achieve one's goals.

"I'm very proud of the hard work, and drive these young men put in this year," said Mr. Walker. He is already looking towards the future, setting goals of growing the program and "getting 1s in both concert and sight reading!"

Now that UIL is over, the choir is looking forward to their upcoming Spring Concert on Tuesday May 16th at McCowan Middle School.
