As DeSoto ISD makes its B-line to excellence it is paramount that parents and families are engaged and soaring too. With this in mind, the DeSoto Independent School District encourages all district parents and guardians to stay connected by participating in Parent & Family Engagement’s academic support programming and family activities.
While this focus on parent involvement is not a new concept in DeSoto ISD, it has been re-imagined to fit the current mission of the district to ensure that all students, without exception, grow to their highest levels.
This year, DeSoto ISD Parent & Family Engagement, through the support of campus parent liaisons, will offer parent learning courses (PLCs) that provide strategies to help students with their assignments as well as in-person programming.
The goal of this district initiative is to inform, educate and empower parents with the knowledge and skills to support their child’s academic and social growth. According to research from the National Education Association Education Policy and Practice Department’s Center for Great Public Schools, when schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher-level programs. DeSoto ISD Parent Engagement Coordinator Melissa Jones believes parents have a great opportunity to truly soar with the district.
“Our goal as a department is for all parents to participate in one Virtual PLC call per month, per campus and two In-Person PLC events per semester, per campus (based on where their child attends), ''Jones said. “During these learning opportunities, our parents will learn how to help their children succeed on the State STAAR Standards as Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires and much more.”
DeSoto ISD Executive Director of State and Federal Programs Andrae Rhyne is excited to help our parent community support their students and the district goals.
“I’m super excited to relaunch our Parent & Family Engagement initiative. The results of our parent survey will help ensure we’re being responsive. Our year 1 plan will help connect parents with our schools and move the district forward and ensure high levels of academic achievement.”
