The national teacher shortage has continued to impact school systems across the country. The need for effective and dedicated teachers, substitutes and tutors continue to be a primary focus for school systems and that’s why DeSoto ISD continues to work towards creating opportunities to attract and retain high-quality educators.

In June, DeSoto ISD announced its plan to offer a series of stipends and incentives designed to more competitively attract and compensate teachers.

Despite these incentives, the district is working to create additional pathways and incentives to entice professionals to become educators.

Increased Substitute Pay
This week, during the Oct 25, 2021 board meeting, the DeSoto Independent School District Board of Trustees approved an increase to substitute teacher pay bringing the category of pay to one of the highest in the Best Southwest.

The DeSoto ISD base rate for substitute teachers was increased to $95 per day. Individuals can earn up to $125 per day based on degree and certification status. In addition, these rates will periodically increase for longer-term assignments.

Grow Your Own Teacher Prep Efforts
The DeSoto ISD Human Resources team is also working on expanding the district’s “Grow Your Own” pipeline program which will provide training and higher education resources to paraprofessionals and substitute teachers interested in becoming full-time teachers.
