Students today are growing up in a digital age that is foreign to most parents – multiple social media platforms, online gaming, technology tools, and cyber-bullying are prevalent in their everyday world. To help parents navigate this foreign world, we are hosting a special event on Thursday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. for parents of teenagers. The event, held at DeSoto High School at 600 Eagle Dr., will include a viewing of the short film Screenagers and a panel discussion with experts regarding student interaction in the digital age.

Screenagers addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on —depicting teen struggles over social media, video games, and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to navigate the digital world best and provides practical resources to help them do it. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to navigate the digital world best to find balance.

“DeSoto ISD is committed to educating parents on the common cyber-risks to today’s students which is why we are offering this event,” stated Dr. David Harris, Superintendent of DeSoto ISD. “We need parents to be involved in their student’s digital life and aware of the pros and cons that can happen online.”

The film was created by a physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston used her family examples to help showcase for all parents the messy struggles between parents and students over screen time. She then uses cutting edge science and insights from thought leaders to present evidence on real changes in the brain. Finally, she reveals multiple approaches to help achieve a healthy amount of screen time.

The film is just over an hour long with a post-viewing panel discussion which will include local law enforcement, licensed professional counselors, school counselors, and school administrators.
