District Superintendent Surprises Middle School Students

Students in Mrs. Toney’s advisory class at Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School were paid a visit by a very special guest earlier this week.  DeSoto Independent School District’s Superintendent of Schools, D’Andre Weaver, Ph.D., visited the sixth-grade class after receiving more than 20 letters from them.

“I read each of your letters,” Dr. Weaver said to the students.  “And I wanted to personally come to thank each of you for being willing to do what it takes to make our schools great.”

Earlier this school year, McCowan teacher, Mrs. Dede Toney, asked students in her advisory class questions about the Superintendent which prompted the opportunity for the students to find ways in which they can contribute to the work of Dr. Weaver and other members of district leadership. “The students realized that they play a major part in how well our district performs,” said Toney. “So, I told them to write Dr. Weaver a letter and tell him how they can make an impact on his job.”

During Weaver’s visit, he shared encouraging words with the students and participated in an already-in-progress classroom discussion about bullying. He encouraged students to report acts of bullying that they have witnessed and to always remain kind to one another. The visit concluded with students and Dr. Weaver forming a heart in the middle of the classroom where positive words of encouragement were shared from McCowan principal, Kelli McWashington.
