Recent DHS graduates, Miguel Obregon, Miles Johnson and Adarius Shavers were awarded the Alpha Merit Scholarship valued at $500 each.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fraternity was forced to cancel its annual Alpha Merit Beautillion, the event where these scholarships would have been awarded. Instead, members traveled around the metroplex including Dallas, Forney, Rowlett, Lancaster, Desoto, and Cedar Hill in a drive-by celebration to deliver yard signs to 11 DFW-area seniors and presenting them with a scholarship.

“Alpha Merit Group Inc. was formed over 50 years ago and designed to enhance leadership skills, promote academic excellence, and broaden the social skills of young men grades 5 through 12,” said Nicholas Johnson, Director of Career and Technical Education in DeSoto ISD and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

In the upcoming Fall semester, Obregon, Johnson and Shavers plan to attend Paul Quinn College, Texas Southern University and Prairie View University, respectively.
