DeSoto ISD Board Approves 2020-2021 Academic Calendar

The DeSoto Independent School District’s Board of Trustees approved the 2020-2021 School Year Academic calendar in a 5-2 vote during the scheduled board workshop meeting on Monday, March 2, 2020.

The decision comes after discussions regarding the format and impact of the calendar as the district leadership expressed a desire to take a more non-traditional and innovative approach to how it structures the district’s use of instructional time. The approved academic calendar will feature two half-days per month scheduled on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month.

“In DeSoto ISD, we are reimagining the way we utilize one of our most precious resources, our time,” said Superintendent of Schools, D’Andre Weaver, Ph.D. “We’ve had many conversations over the past few months to determine ways we can better engage our students and how we can redefine their learning experience.”

Upon dismissal at the conclusion of the half-day, students will depart for home or to after school care and teachers will engage in professional development and other growth opportunities designed to build capacity for instruction and leadership.

The goal of the half-day calendar structure is to provide a setting in which teachers can connect with district instructional leaders, educational experts, and district-level administrators for training, planning and other opportunities under the guidance of the district’s Teaching, Learning, and Leadership division.

Given the district’s focus on campuses and classrooms, and prioritizing the improvement of academic quality and experiences, this transition will ensure multi-layered support systems and recurring touchpoints aimed at creating consistency and operationalizing standards and expectations for the management and leadership of every classroom across the district.

Additional features of the 2020-2021 academic calendar include an August 17, 2020, start date for students and a May 28, 2021, end to the academic year. Spring Break will take place March 15-19, 2021, a week later than scheduled during the 2019-2020 school year.

Given the addition of the half-day calendar structure, the district meets and exceeds the number of instructional minutes mandated by the state. More information regarding the 2020-2021 DeSoto ISD academic calendar can be found on the district’s website at www.desotoisd.org/2021Calendar.
