Beginning Monday, October 5, 2020, DeSoto ISD will welcome pre-kindergarten students enrolled at Amber Terrace Discovery and Design Early Childhood Academy.

“We are really excited to begin the process of welcoming our students back to school,” said Keishla Coleman, Principal of Amber Terrace. “Although it’ll only be this select group of students, I look forward to adapting to our new normal.”

In addition to Pre-K students, the District will also welcome students in need of Special Education services.  “It is increasingly important for these scholars to return to campus to receive the specialized instruction and services as documented in the IEP,” said Chasity Jackson, DeSoto ISD’s Director of Special Education. “We will ensure that these students receive the tools needed to continue their educational journey.”

At this time, only students whose families have elected campus-supervised learning as their preferred option for the second six weeks of school are eligible for the return. DeSoto ISD has worked meticulously to ensure the health and safety of every student and staff within their system.

On September 30, DeSoto ISD announced a phase-in schedule for additional grade levels to return to campus. Read more about the phase-in plan here.

The custodial team has been working since March to ensure the cleanliness of all district facilities. Some cleaning projects included shampooing the carpet in every classroom, waxing and striping the flooring in hallways, cafeterias and offices.

Each classroom, restroom, cafeteria, and all high-tough areas will be cleaned and disinfected daily using Oxivir Tb, a fast-acting disinfectant that is guaranteed to kill germs and detrimental viruses in one minute or less. Additionally, the district has upgraded its HVAC and air filtration system that would essentially purify the air to adequately supply fresh air into the buildings.

Prior to arriving on campus, the district asks that families perform daily symptom checks to ensure that students are not exhibiting any signs of COVID-19. Students and staff will be required to wear a facial covering, covering the nose and mouth, for the entire day with the exception of during lunch. In another effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, transportation will not be provided to or from campus with the exception of students receiving Special Education services.

DeSoto ISD has developed a comprehensive safety protocols guide to outline procedures related to on-campus activities. These guides can be found on the district’s Reconnect Return-to-School webspace at DeSotoISD.org/Reconnect. Additionally, the District has created Day in the Life scenario videos that give a detailed look at campus-supervised and home-supervised learning in DeSoto ISD.
