Benjamin Pearson, a seventh grade scholar at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy, has made history by advancing to the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee. He is the first student from DeSoto ISD in recent years to qualify for the regional competition and the furthest advancing participant in district history. The regional event is expected to be held and televised at WFAA Studios in Dallas.
“I’m really excited and glad that I won," Pearson said. I’ve always loved language, linguistics, and spelling, so I’m really grateful for this opportunity”.
Pearson earned his spot after first winning the district spelling bee and then the county, demonstrating advanced vocabulary knowledge, linguistic precision and composure under pressure. His preparation included studying word origins, definitions and language patterns, skills that extend beyond competition and into everyday academic success.
Spelling is a foundational pillar of literacy, strengthening reading comprehension, vocabulary development and written communication. A deep understanding of spelling supports phonics, word structure and etymology, all of which are critical to long term academic achievement across content areas. Pearson’s accomplishment underscores the district’s continued emphasis on building strong literacy foundations for all scholars.
“Benjamin’s success demonstrates what happens when strong literacy foundations meet perseverance and high expectations,” KJTMA Principal Yolanda Hanspard said. “He has set a new standard for DeSoto ISD, and we are incredibly proud of the discipline and academic excellence he represents.”
As he prepares for the regional stage, Pearson carries the pride of Eagle Nation and represents a milestone moment in DeSoto ISD’s academic history.
