Ruby Marguerite Young dedicated her life’s work to educating children, leaving a legacy that continues to impact and inspire generations in DeSoto.
Young was born in the early 1900s, a time when opportunities for women were limited in many professions. But she was undeterred by the obstacles of her time. With a passion for learning and an unwavering commitment to making a difference, she pursued a career in education. After earning her teaching certificate, Young began her career in DeSoto ISD in 1931.
She spent nearly 50 years teaching, primarily in elementary education, where she instilled a love for learning and provided students with the tools to succeed despite the challenges they faced.
Her teaching philosophy was rooted in the belief that education has the power to transform lives. She was known for her patience, nurturing spirit, and ability to inspire and uplift students. Young saw education not just as a path to academic success but as a means of empowerment, self-confidence, and opportunity.
In 1964, as DeSoto ISD opened a new school to accommodate the growing community, officials fittingly named it after Young. Ruby Young Talented and Gifted Academy, now known for its focus on personalized education and accelerated learning, stands as a tribute to her lifelong dedication to teaching and empowering young people.
Although Young retired in 1980, her influence did not end. The school that bears her name continues to foster a passion for learning among students in DeSoto. Today, the academy remains a beacon of academic achievement, much as Young herself was during her years of teaching. Her legacy lives on in the students who pass through its doors, many of whom go on to accomplish great things.
Young’s life is a testament to the power of women in education and the lasting impact one dedicated individual can have on an entire community. Her story is one of resilience, service, and the unwavering belief that education is the key to a brighter future.
As DeSoto ISD celebrates Women’s History Month, we honor Ruby Marguerite Young not just for her contributions as an educator but for the lives she touched, the hope she inspired, and the foundation she laid for future generations. Her legacy is a reminder that the work of women in education shapes the world for the better—one student at a time.
