DeSoto Independent School District has announced that it
will transition to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 5A Division.
This decision follows a comprehensive review of district enrollment, team
roster depth, and input from coaches and staff.
Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, DeSoto ISD will
transition to UIL Class 5A competition, with this alignment remaining in
place through 2028. This change is based on enrollment data, team roster
sizes, and input from coaches, and is designed to support student safety,
equity, and meaningful participation.
Under this alignment:
- Football
will compete in Conference 5A, Division I, Region II, District 8
- Basketball
will compete in Class 5A, Division I, Region II, District 15
- Volleyball
will compete in Class 5A, Division I, Region II, District 15
This decision is guided by:
- Safety:
Ensuring athletes compete in environments appropriate to team sizes,
reducing the risk of injury.
- Equity:
Meaningful participation opportunities across all sports programs.
- Scholar
benefits: More playing time, leadership opportunities, and skill
development for every athlete.
While UIL ultimately governs classification, the district,
as the Local Education Agency (LEA), engaged fully in the process to advocate
for student-athlete interests. The decision prioritizes student safety,
equitable participation, and program sustainability.
Key considerations include:
- Smaller
rosters in several programs, particularly football and basketball,
compared with other 6A schools
- Ensuring
meaningful playing opportunities and leadership roles for all
student-athletes
- Operational
efficiencies, including reduced travel and staffing costs, which can be
reinvested into athletic programs and facilities
“Our priority is the growth, safety, and overall
experience of every student-athlete,” said Superintendent Dr. Usamah
Rodgers. “This alignment allows us to provide equitable opportunities across
all sports programs while maintaining the high standards of competition,
integrity, and Eagle PRIDE that define DeSoto ISD athletics.”
“Our coaches and athletes will continue to compete with
pride and excellence,” said Athletics Director M.T. Tyeskie. “This
decision positions our programs for long-term sustainability, gives more
scholars meaningful playing time, and ensures safe competition while
maintaining the competitive spirit of our teams.”
DeSoto ISD remains fully committed to supporting all
coaches, student-athletes, and programs, fostering growth, skill development,
and leadership opportunities across every sport. The district will continue to
monitor enrollment trends and program needs to ensure that athletic
opportunities remain safe, equitable, and competitive.
