DeSoto ISD is proud to announce that Tonisha Hedge, Mathematics and Computer Science Teacher at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy, has been awarded the prestigious TI Innovative Teaching in STEM Award, sponsored by the Texas Instruments Foundation. This annual award recognizes exceptional educators who creatively utilize technology and other innovative teaching methods to enhance student achievement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The TI Innovative Teaching in STEM Award honors secondary (middle and high school) teachers who demonstrate outstanding commitment to improving student learning and engagement in STEM fields. As a recipient, Tonisha Hedge will receive a $10,000 cash prize—$5,000 for personal use and $5,000 for furthering STEM-related professional development, classroom materials, and technology. This recognition underscores her groundbreaking efforts in transforming STEM education and inspiring her students to pursue careers in technology and engineering.
DeSoto ISD Superintendent Dr. Usamah Rodgers expressed her pride in Hedge’s accomplishment, stating, “We are extremely proud of Ms. Hedge for earning the TI Innovative Teaching in STEM Award. Her passion for teaching and her ability to engage students in real-world STEM applications are truly remarkable. Her work not only helps students build crucial technical skills but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—skills that are essential for success in today’s fast-changing world. Ms. Hedge is an exemplary educator, and we are fortunate to have her in DeSoto ISD.”
Over the past two years, Hedge has developed a dynamic Computer Science program that incorporates Python programming, artificial intelligence (AI) research, and hands-on projects using TI-Nspire Rovers. Her students have thrived in an environment that connects coding and mathematics to real-world applications, empowering them to develop essential problem-solving and computational thinking skills.
Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer for DeSoto ISD, emphasized the program’s impact on student outcomes: “Ms. Hedge’s innovative approach to teaching computer science is a perfect example of how effective STEM education can inspire students to pursue careers in technology, mathematics, and beyond. Her ability to make abstract concepts accessible and exciting has had a profound impact on her students. This recognition is a testament to her dedication and to the power of innovative teaching in shaping the future of education.”
Hedge’s students have excelled in her interdisciplinary approach, exploring AI in various fields and using coding skills to solve complex problems. Her ability to integrate technology into her curriculum and foster a hands-on learning environment has created an engaging and impactful experience for her students.
Reflecting on her achievement, Tonisha Hedge said, “I am truly honored to receive this award, but it is the success of my students that means the most to me. Seeing them develop not just as programmers but as critical thinkers and problem-solvers is incredibly rewarding. My goal is to empower them to believe in their abilities and to see how the skills they’re learning today will shape their future. This recognition encourages me to continue striving for excellence in the classroom, and I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries for the students in DeSoto ISD.”
In addition to this prestigious award, Tonisha Hedge was also named the Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy Campus Teacher of the Year, a further testament to her impact on her students and the DeSoto community. Her students not only learn technical skills but also develop a growth mindset that empowers them to tackle challenges and reach their full potential.
The TI Innovative Teaching in STEM Award, part of the Texas Instruments Foundation’s commitment to education, encourages innovative teaching practices that enhance STEM education. By recognizing exceptional educators like Ms. Hedge, the Foundation supports the development of students who are prepared to succeed in an increasingly technological world.
