In honor of National Reading Month, DeSoto ISD second-grade scholars experienced a one-of-a-kind educational journey where literacy met the arts through a live orchestral performance at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on March 27, 2025. The event, held at the prestigious Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, featured the production “Heroes and Legends: Magical Musical Tales”—a concert designed to ignite imaginations through storytelling and sound.
As part of the district’s Triple-A Experience, this field trip offered students a unique opportunity to witness how music can tell stories, convey emotion, and celebrate heroic figures—enhancing classroom learning in new and meaningful ways. With powerful pieces such as Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Silvestri’s Avengers Theme, the concert bridged the worlds of music, literature, and performance, bringing legendary characters to life through sweeping melodies and dramatic scores.
Though Read Across America primarily focuses on promoting reading and literacy, this experience aligned perfectly with the initiative’s broader goals:
-
Multimodal Literacy: By listening and interpreting music, students engaged in a non-traditional form of literacy, building comprehension, critical thinking, and emotional awareness.
-
Narrative Exploration: The concert’s storytelling approach through music allowed students to imagine plots, characters, and emotions, deepening their understanding of narrative structure—a vital reading skill.
-
Arts Integration & Cultural Exposure: Experiencing a professional symphony performance helped students appreciate the arts, while also fostering empathy, curiosity, and an appreciation for creative expression.

This event exemplifies DeSoto ISD’s commitment to holistic education—ensuring students grow academically, artistically, and emotionally. By extending learning beyond the classroom, experiences like these enrich students’ understanding of the world and help cultivate a lifelong love of reading, learning, and the arts.
DeSoto ISD is proud to celebrate our second-grade scholars’ engagement with the arts during National Reading Month, and we look forward to creating more unforgettable learning opportunities that support their academic journeys.
