For senior residents 65 years of age and older and for residents who are disabled, the DeSoto Independent School District (ISD) would like to clarify that there will be no increase in property taxes for those who qualify for the homestead exemption. This exemption is designed to provide relief to eligible homeowners by reducing the taxable value of their home, ensuring that seniors do not experience a significant tax burden increase as a result of local bond elections.

In addition, DeSoto ISD would like to clarify the distinction between the impact of city bond taxes and school district bond taxes. While both types of bonds can appear on a property tax statement, it is important to understand that they are separate entities.

  • City of DeSoto Bond Taxes: These are taxes levied by the city government to fund city-related projects such as infrastructure, public safety, and public works.
  • DeSoto ISD Bond Taxes: These are taxes levied by the school district to fund educational-related projects such as the construction of new school buildings, facility improvements, and educational programs that directly benefit our students and the community.

For disabled residents and those who are aged 65 and older who qualify for the homestead exemption, the DeSoto ISD bond taxes are capped. This means that even if new school bonds are approved, there will be no increase in school district taxes for homeowners 65 and older on their primary residence. This provides important financial protection for our senior citizens and ensures they can continue to live comfortably without the worry of rising property taxes due to the school bond issues.

We encourage our community members to stay informed about local bond elections and understand how these may affect their overall tax burden.

DeSoto ISD is committed to supporting all stakeholders through high-quality schools and educational experiences for students, families, and seniors alike.
