The DeSoto Independent School District is proud to announce a strategic and exciting transition in the way it celebrates and supports students receiving special education services. Beginning this year, the district will discontinue its long-running Eagle Olympics event and instead focus on full participation in Texas Special Olympics programs.

This move reflects DeSoto ISD’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, equity, and the expansion of high-quality opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“While Eagle Olympics has been a wonderful event that brought joy and unity to our campus communities, transitioning to Special Olympics allows our students to engage on a larger scale,” said Stephanie Fuller, Executive Director of Special Populations for DeSoto ISD. “Through this shift, our students will now have the opportunity to compete and fellowship with their peers from across the metroplex, building meaningful connections and celebrating their abilities in a more enriching environment.”

Special Olympics, founded in 1968, is a globally recognized movement that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. With programming in all 50 states and more than 5 million athletes worldwide, it offers a robust and inclusive platform for personal growth, community building, and athletic development.

DeSoto ISD’s decision to align with Texas Special Olympics supports broader district goals of fostering inclusive learning environments and increasing student access to regional resources and networks.

“This is more than just a change in programming—it’s a reflection of how we’re scaling opportunities for our students,” said Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer for DeSoto ISD. “Through the Special Olympics, students will experience new levels of empowerment, teamwork, and achievement. It’s about ensuring every student is seen, supported, and celebrated.”

In addition to athletic competitions, Special Olympics events often include family engagement components, health screenings, and community outreach efforts, providing comprehensive support to student-athletes and their families.

“At DeSoto ISD, we believe in preparing all students to soar—and that includes making sure our students receiving special education services are given access to the same rich, life-changing experiences as their peers,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools. “This transition reflects our district’s dedication to inclusivity and our belief in the unlimited potential of every student.”

The district will share additional details in the coming weeks, including how families can get involved, upcoming event schedules, and opportunities for student participation.
