Held on May 5 from 6 to 7 p.m., the event featured student performances from multiple grade levels, highlighting traditional music, dances, and poetry that reflected the significance of the historic Mexican holiday. Monica Castro-Torres served as the master of ceremonies, guiding the program with plenty of warmth and energy. Ana Coca welcomed attendees in both English and Spanish, setting the tone for an inclusive and celebratory evening.

The program began with a presentation on the significance of Cinco de Mayo by a first-grade student, reminding the audience of the historic 1862 Battle of Puebla and its enduring legacy of resilience and resistance.

Performances included “Son de la Negra” by pre-kindergarten students from Amber Terrace, “Tierra Madre” by kindergartners, and the spirited “Caballo Dorado” by first-grade students. A full group dance featuring students from kindergarten through second grade energized the crowd, followed by a touching poem recited by a second-grade student.

The cultural celebration continued with a solo performance of “Si Una Vez” by DeSoto High School 10th grader Paige Williams, drawing enthusiastic applause. Teachers joined in the fun with a lively rendition of “Danza Kuduro,” adding to the festive atmosphere.

The event left families with smiles and a renewed appreciation for the power of cultural connection in education. The celebration was more than a performance—it was a testament to the district’s commitment to honoring diversity, fostering student confidence, and bringing the community together through the arts.
