The DeSoto Independent School District honors the life and legacy of Michael “Mike” Robinson, former DeSoto High School Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director, following his recent passing.

Robinson, 59,  led successful football programs at DeSoto, North Mesquite, Dallas Hillcrest, and Wilmer-Hutchins. He also had stints at Lancaster, Commerce, Denton, and Gainesville. The dedicated coach died this month after battling multiple life-threatening illnesses. According to SportsDayHS, Robinson was suffering from multiple system atrophy as well as sepsis.

Coach Robinson spent one season with DeSoto – going 9-3 during 2018 before stepping into a different role within its athletic department. The Eagles finished third in district play and won a playoff game against Dallas Skyline 55-53 before their season ended with a 41-20 loss against Southlake Carroll in the area round. Robinson served DeSoto ISD with dedication and pride, leading the DeSoto High School football program and later continuing his service in a district leadership role focused on sports marketing and student-athlete promotion. Throughout his career, he was known as a coach who valued character, discipline, and relationships, and as a mentor who prioritized the personal growth and success of students both on and off the field.

“Coach Robinson’s impact extended far beyond athletics,” said DeSoto ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Usamah Rodgers. “He believed deeply in young people and worked tirelessly to support their development, celebrate their accomplishments, and prepare them for future success.”

Following his tenure as head football coach, Robinson transitioned into the role of Assistant Athletic Director, where he highlighted student-athlete achievements, supported college recruitment efforts, and helped strengthen DeSoto ISD’s athletics programs. He continued to serve the district with professionalism and commitment during times of transition, always remaining focused on students and community.

Coach Robinson passed away after a courageous battle with illness. He is remembered by colleagues, former players, families, and the broader Texas high school football community as a respected leader, a compassionate mentor, and a devoted family man. Robinson is remembered for his wide impact on the sports community and is survived by his wife, former DeSoto ISD Principal Angela Robinson, their children, and a host of family and friends.

Through a district-issued, board-adopted resolution, the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees expressed its deepest sympathy to the Robinson family and affirmed that Coach Robinson’s legacy will continue through the many lives he influenced and the lasting impact of his service.

A copy of the resolution will be entered into the district’s official records and presented to the Robinson family in recognition of his contributions to DeSoto ISD and the DeSoto Eagles community.
