Building Futures, One Chapter at a Time
At Cockrell Hill Elementary, the library is more than just a room full of books—it is a hub of curiosity, imagination, and growth. At the heart of this environment is Jamesha Arnold, a dedicated library assistant who has been serving the DeSoto ISD community for nearly three years.
A Passion for Literacy and Learning
For Arnold, the role of a library assistant is about far more than organization or resource management; it is about creating a sanctuary where students feel empowered to explore. Whether witnessing a student’s reading habits evolve or seeing them return a book they simply couldn't put down, Arnold finds her greatest rewards in the tangible growth of her students.
She views the library as a foundational pillar of elementary education, providing the essential tools for literacy and critical thinking that students need to build productive futures.
"What excites me most is seeing students develop a love for reading and learning," Arnold shared. "It’s rewarding to help them discover books that spark their interest and confidence."
A District-Wide Example of Determination
Recently, Ms. Arnold was honored in a district-wide recognition for her commitment to literacy and student achievement. District Librarian Diane Gill cited Arnold’s determination as her defining trait—a quality visible in both her daily professional duties and her ambitious career goals.
District Librarian Diane Gill highlighted this aspect of her unwavering drive. “From the very beginning, she has shown up for our students, our campus, and the library program. Ms. Arnold shows determination through her willingness to grow, learn, and take on new challenges, and is determined to make it all happen."
Beyond managing library operations, Arnold specifically spearheads reading initiatives, coordinates the campus spelling bee, and maintains the school’s book vending machines.
Her dedication is particularly impressive given that she is balancing her full-time role and parenting with her enrollment in the DeSoto ISD Para-to-Teacher program through Dallas College. This program is a "Grow Your Own" initiative, structured for working adults with classroom experience, designed to help educational paraprofessionals—such as instructional aides, library assistants, and substitutes transition into full-time, certified teaching roles.
The Journey: From Para to Professional
Arnold’s desire to become a certified teacher is fueled by a lifelong passion for supporting student success. She is now utilizing the para-to-professional program to bridge the gap between her current role and her ultimate goal: leading her own classroom.
Arnold is currently focused on completing her bachelor’s degree over the next two and a half years. She is committed to developing the pedagogical skills necessary to make an even deeper impact on her community and her students.
Arnold’s personal motivation is best captured by the type of educator she strives to be:
"The type of teacher I aspire to become is one who creates a supportive, engaging, and positive learning environment where all students feel encouraged to succeed. I want to be someone who helps students build confidence both academically and personally."
As she constructs a positive future for herself, Arnold is also diligently creating connections, inspiring literacy, and fostering a love for learning through every student interaction at Cockrell Hill Elementary. In doing so, she is playing a vital role in fulfilling the district’s mission "to ensure students, without exception, learn and grow at their highest levels."
