DeSoto Independent School District proudly recognizes Speech Pathologist Day on May 18, honoring the specialized professionals who help students develop the communication skills essential for academic success, social connection, and lifelong achievement.
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in DeSoto ISD serve a vital role in supporting students with speech, language, voice, fluency, and communication challenges. Through individualized interventions, collaborative support with educators, and family engagement, these professionals help ensure that every student has access to meaningful participation in the classroom and beyond.
“Speech-language pathologists are instrumental in helping students find their voice—literally and figuratively,” said Stephanie Fuller, DeSoto ISD Executive Director of Special Populations. “Their work directly impacts a student’s confidence, academic growth, and ability to fully engage in learning environments.”
In DeSoto ISD, SLPs work across campuses as part of multidisciplinary teams supporting students receiving special education and related services. Their expertise helps remove barriers to learning by strengthening expressive and receptive language skills, improving articulation, and supporting social communication development.
“Speech pathologists are essential members of our special education teams,” said Demtra Milla, DeSoto ISD Director of Special Education. “They collaborate with teachers, families, and support staff to design intentional interventions that meet students where they are and help them progress toward their goals.”
The district also emphasized that communication development is foundational to student achievement across all content areas, from reading comprehension to classroom participation and peer interaction.
“Every student deserves the opportunity to communicate effectively and confidently,” said Brent S. Mitchell, DeSoto ISD Interim Superintendent of Schools. “We are grateful for our speech-language pathologists whose expertise and dedication ensure students receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially.”
Throughout Speech Pathologist Day, DeSoto ISD encourages staff, students, and families to recognize and celebrate the professionals who help students strengthen their voices and unlock their full potential.
