DeSoto ISD Celebrates Nurses Week, Honoring the Vital Role of School Nurses in Student Health and Learning
DeSoto Independent School District proudly recognizes National Nurses Week (May 6–12), celebrating the dedication, expertise, and compassion of school nurses who play a critical role in supporting student health and academic success.
The observance begins on May 6—recognized nationally as National School Nurse Day—and concludes on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, whose legacy helped shape modern nursing practices. Together, these dates honor the individuals who have advanced the field of nursing and continue to elevate standards of care across communities, including in schools.
“School nurses are essential to the overall well-being of our students and the functioning of our campuses,” said Dr. Gene Morrow, DeSoto iSD Executive Director of Student Support Services. “They are often the first line of care—ensuring students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn each day.”
Supporting Health, Supporting Learning
In DeSoto ISD, school nurses serve as frontline healthcare providers, addressing immediate medical needs while also managing chronic conditions, administering medications, and promoting preventative care. Their work directly supports a safe and well school environment where students can focus, engage, and succeed academically.
Research consistently shows that student health is closely tied to academic performance. By reducing health-related barriers to attendance and learning, school nurses play a vital role in improving student outcomes.
“Our nurses do far more than respond to illness or injury,” said Dr. Lastasscia Williams, DeSoto ISD Director of Health Services. “They build relationships with students and families, provide health education, and help create environments where wellness is prioritized. Their presence ensures that students can remain in class, engaged, and ready to achieve.”
A Commitment to Whole-Child Wellness
DeSoto ISD’s school nurses are an integral part of the district’s broader commitment to whole-child support, working in collaboration with counselors, administrators, and student services teams to address both physical and emotional health needs.
From managing daily health concerns to responding to emergencies and supporting public health initiatives, their contributions are essential to maintaining continuity in learning and fostering a culture of care across campuses.
“Healthy students are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed,” said Brent S. Mitchell, DeSoto ISD Interim Superintendent of Schools. “We are grateful for our school nurses, whose expertise and compassion ensure that our campuses remain safe, supportive environments for every student.”
Honoring a Lasting Impact
Throughout Nurses Week, DeSoto ISD encourages students, staff, and families to recognize and celebrate the contributions of school nurses who make a difference every day—often behind the scenes, but always at the heart of student success.
