DeSoto Independent School District is proud to join the national celebration of National Library Month, highlighting the vital role that school libraries, librarians, and library staff play in empowering scholars through access to books, resources, and a lifelong love of reading.

Throughout the month of April, schools across the district are hosting a variety of library-themed events and reading initiatives to engage scholars, families, and staff in celebrating the power of literacy. These include:

  • Campus-wide reading challenges encouraging students to meet personal reading goals

  • Library scavenger hunts designed to help students explore and discover new genres

  • Book fairs and author spotlight events to connect readers with new literature

  • “Drop Everything and Read” days to promote independent reading

  • Library Worker Appreciation Week celebrations recognizing campus librarians and support staff with thank-you notes, treats, and shout-outs during morning announcements

In addition to honoring National Library Workers Day (April 8) and National Librarian Day (April 16), the district is spotlighting the critical role libraries play in supporting the district’s academic vision. As part of DeSoto ISD’s Board Goals, which prioritize the development of literacy skills at every grade level, the district remains committed to strengthening reading comprehension and academic achievement across all content areas.

“Reading is the foundation for all learning,” said Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer for DeSoto ISD. “Our librarians and library staff are literacy champions who inspire curiosity and create a culture of reading in every building. Their work directly supports our board goals and fuels student growth across every subject.”

McCloud also emphasized the unique role libraries play in student success:
“Our libraries are more than book collections—they are vibrant learning hubs that foster independence, imagination, and academic excellence. They are instrumental in helping our scholars become strong, confident readers and learners.”

DeSoto ISD libraries also provide access to digital tools, research materials, and personalized reading support, helping bridge opportunity gaps and giving all students the resources they need to thrive.

This National Library Month, DeSoto ISD celebrates not just the spaces, but the people who make them extraordinary. Librarians and library workers are essential partners in education, cultivating environments where every scholar has the opportunity to grow.
