DeSoto Independent School District is proud to observe Black History Month with a series of campus-based programs highlighting the rich culture, enduring history, and significant achievements of African Americans. Throughout February, students across all grade levels will showcase learning through performances, presentations, and visual displays that reflect the district’s commitment to excellence, representation, and community pride.

“These programs give our students an opportunity to engage deeply with history while expressing their learning through the arts,” said Twynette Anderson, DeSoto ISD Director of Fine Arts. “Black History Month is not only about honoring the past, but also about celebrating creativity, resilience, and the powerful voices that continue to shape our world today.”

The observance aligns with DeSoto ISD’s mission to empower students to be critical thinkers, culturally aware citizens, and future leaders.

“Black history is American history, and it is essential that our students see themselves reflected in what they learn and celebrate,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools. “These campus programs strengthen connections between our schools and families while reinforcing our shared responsibility to honor legacy, achievement, and progress.”
