DeSoto High School recently hosted an exciting signing day, where two of its standout student-athletes officially committed to taking their talents to the collegiate level.

The event honored the dedication, hard work, and perseverance of two players—Keelea Alexander the volleyball star headed to University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the other, Helen Broomfield, the softball powerhouse who’s headed to Howard University.

“Our athletes are student athletes and academics always come before the athletics part,” said Donald Miller, Assistant Athletic Coordinator for DHS.

“You can’t go to college to Howard University or UTSA without having great academics, so I’m very proud of them.”

In front of a cheering crowd of family, teammates, and coaches, the athletes stood proudly against the green and gold backdrop, representing DeSoto pride and the spirit of Eagle athletics.

Both players are now set to spread their wings, with one bringing her skills to the volleyball court and the other stepping up to the plate on the softball field.

Alexander, (UTSA), has been a key player at DeSoto, known for her powerful serves and fierce blocks.

Since her time at DHS Alexander has amassed 1,000 career digs, been named 1st Team All-District, and earned Academic All-District.

Her journey has been filled with success, unforgettable matches, and victories that have left a mark on the court.
Broomfield has made her own impact as a DeSoto Eagle with impressive fielding and batting, making her a true diamond on the field.

Broomfield’s batting average has been like no other, having batted .445 and have yet to begin her senior season.

She also won the 11-6A Softball Catcher of the Year Award as well as boasting a stolen base time of 19-seconds according to Dennis Walker, DeSoto High School Head Softball Coach.

Walker credits Broomfield’s parents for her continued success, having taken her to multiple summer camps.

“It takes the parents to stay on the kids and its very beneficial to be on one accord with their daughter,” said Walker.

As Broomfield takes her talents to the college level, she’ll be bringing her batting strength and fielding finesse along, ready to knock it out of the park at every opportunity.

Another student athlete, DHS Boys Basketball standout Cameren Paul was not in attendance, but had signed his letter of intent and chosen to take his talents to Mississippi State University.

These three athletes have exemplified and embodied the DHS DeSoto ISD spirit, showing that with determination, skill, and passion, anything is possible.

DeSoto ISD celebrates their achievements and eagerly anticipates following their journeys as they continue to soar.
