As we progress through the winter season, we want to provide an update regarding the impact of cold and flu season on our school community. Like many area school districts, DeSoto ISD has seen an increase in the number of students and staff members experiencing cold and flu-like symptoms. Some neighboring districts have even made the difficult decision to close campuses temporarily to mitigate the spread of illness. While we have not experienced that level of concerned related to the frequency of diagnoses related to cold and flu resulting in elevated absences from students and staff nor has the district made any closures at this time, we are closely monitoring trends within our schools and taking proactive steps to ensure the health and wellness of our students and staff.
To help reduce the spread of illness, DeSoto ISD has implemented several important measures, including the following:
- Active Monitoring of Health Trends
We are consistently tracking reports of cold and flu symptoms across the district and working closely with our school nurses to assess patterns of illness. If necessary, we will continue to take appropriate action to limit exposure and protect the health of our community.
- Deep Cleaning and Disinfection
Our custodial staff is working diligently to disinfect and sanitize classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and high-touch surfaces throughout the district. These measures are being ramped up in order to reduce germs and bacteria that may contribute to the spread of illness. We are committed to providing a clean and healthy environment for our students and staff.
- Preventative Measures for Families
We encourage families to follow these important health tips to reduce the spread of illness:
- Frequent handwashing: Ensure your child washes their hands regularly, especially after coughing, sneezing, or using the restroom.
- Covering coughs and sneezes: Teach your child to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or their elbow. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash hands.
- Stay home when sick: If your child shows any signs or symptoms of illness (fever, cough, sore throat, body aches), please keep them home to rest and recover. This helps reduce exposure and supports the health of teachers and classmates.
- Monitor health closely: Keep an eye on any changes in your child’s health and wellness, and be proactive in keeping them home if symptoms emerge.
4.Encouraging Wellness Among Students
It is crucial that we all do our part in protecting one another. If your child begins to show any signs or symptoms of illness, please consider keeping them home until they are feeling better. By doing so, you are not only supporting the recovery of your child, but also ensuring the safety and well-being of our teachers, staff, and other students.
We understand that the cold and flu season can be challenging, but we remain committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for our students.
We appreciate your partnership in monitoring your child’s health and for supporting our efforts to reduce illness transmission in our schools. Together, we can work to maintain a safe and healthy school community.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding regarding school community wellness efforts in DeSoto ISD.
