The expectations surrounding DeSoto High School football are no secret.
After capturing another state championship last season, the Eagles return to the field in 2026 with a new schedule, a new classification and the same expectation that has come to define the program: compete at the highest level.
Led by head coach Claude Mathis, DeSoto enters the season following a 13-3 campaign that ended with a 55-27 victory over C.E. King in the Class 6A Division II state championship game. The victory secured the program’s fourth state championship and third title in four seasons. Success at that level has made championship expectations part of the standard in DeSoto.
But as a new season begins, Mathis and the Eagles will have to build another championship team rather than rely on what previous teams accomplished.
“The expectations are always going to be high at DeSoto, and that is something we embrace,” Mathis said. “But what we did last year does not win a game for us this year. This team has to establish its own identity, put in the work and earn everything it gets. Our focus is on getting better every day, taking care of our academics and representing DeSoto the right way. If we do those things consistently, the results will take care of themselves.”
The 2026 season brings a significant change for the Eagles as DeSoto moves from Class 6A to Class 5A Division I following the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment. DeSoto will compete in District 8-5A Division I alongside Burleson Centennial, Cedar Hill, Cleburne, Lancaster, Mansfield Legacy, Mansfield Summit and Midlothian.
Before district competition begins, DeSoto will face a demanding non-district schedule designed to test the Eagles early.
The season begins Aug. 29 on the road against perennial Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale. The Eagles then travel to face Allen on Sept. 4 before returning to get ready for one of the most anticipated games of the season — a Sept. 12 matchup against Duncanville at the Cotton Bowl.
Those early tests will give DeSoto an opportunity to measure itself against high-level competition before turning its attention toward the district championship race.
DeSoto enters the season as the defending state champion carrying the expectations that come with being one of Texas’ premier high school football programs. The Eagles will face those expectations one practice, one opponent and one week at a time.
As kickoff approaches, DeSoto ISD encourages students, staff, families, alumni and the entire DeSoto community to show up, wear green and gold and support the Eagles throughout the 2026 season.
A new season is coming.
A new team is ready to write its story.
And DeSoto is ready for football.
