DeSoto ISD set to Host Vibrant Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Cockrell Hill Elementary

Today,
DeSoto ISD proudly recognizes Cinco de Mayo, commemorating the 1862
Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla. More than just a historical event,
Cinco de Mayo symbolizes the enduring spirit of courage, culture, and
community.
As part of
this recognition, DeSoto ISD invites all families and community members to
attend its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Monday, May 5, 2025,
from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at Cockrell Hill Elementary.
Organized to
honor the cultural significance of the holiday, this family-friendly event
will showcase student and staff performances that highlight the rich traditions
of Mexican heritage. The evening will be hosted by Monica Castro-Torres,
who will serve as Master of Ceremony.
Program Highlights:
- Bilingual welcome from Ana Coca
- Presentation on the meaning of
Cinco de Mayo by a 1st
grade student
- Student performances representing various grade
levels:
- Son de la Negra – Amber Terrace Pre-K
- Tierra Madre – Kindergarten
- Caballo Dorado – 1st Grade
- Full group dance – K–2nd Grade
- Poem – 2nd Grade student
- Si Una Vez – Paige Williams, 10th Grade,
DeSoto High School
- Special staff performance of Danza Kuduro
The
celebration will conclude with closing remarks from Castro-Torres, uniting
attendees through music, dance, and a shared appreciation for cultural
heritage.
DeSoto ISD
encourages families and community members to join in honoring this meaningful
occasion. Together, we celebrate the contributions and traditions of our
Hispanic students, staff, and families.
