DeSoto ISD to Host Bilingual TELPAS Parent Information Sessions to Support Emergent Bilingual Students

DeSoto Independent School District’s Bilingual/ESL Department invites families and community members to attend upcoming TELPAS Parent Information Sessions, bilingual events designed to inform, empower, and engage families of Emergent Bilingual (EB) students while strengthening partnerships between home and school.
The sessions will provide families with a clear understanding of the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), a statewide assessment required for Emergent Bilingual students in Texas. TELPAS measures students’ progress in acquiring academic English across listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and plays an important role in informing instruction, monitoring growth, and ensuring schools provide appropriate language supports aligned to state standards.
“TELPAS is not about labeling students; it’s about understanding how they are progressing in English so we can provide the right supports at the right time,” said Camina Moreno, Director of Emergent Bilingual Programs for DeSoto ISD. “These sessions help families understand how TELPAS fits into their child’s educational journey and how language development connects directly to academic success.”
