DeSoto Independent School District will host a Special Olympics Basketball Skills Competition on March 24, 2026, at Chris Dyer Gym located on the DeSoto High School campus (600 Eagle Drive, DeSoto, TX 75115).

This inter-district event will bring together student athletes from nine other school systems highlighting the district’s commitment to inclusive student opportunities. Scholars will have the opportunity to showcase their athletic skills in a supportive and engaging environment.  Participants will compete in a variety of basketball skill events designed to promote confidence, teamwork, and physical activity. The competition also serves as a celebration of student achievement and perseverance, bringing together families, staff, and the broader school community in support of student athletes.

“This event reflects our commitment to ensuring all students have access to meaningful and engaging extracurricular opportunities,” said Stephanie Fuller, Executive Director of Special Populations for DeSoto ISD. “By bringing together scholars from across our district, we are creating a space where students can build confidence, develop skills, and feel celebrated for their abilities.”

“We are intentional about designing experiences that support the whole child,” said Demetra Miller, Director of Special Education for DeSoto ISD. “Opportunities like this allow our students to grow socially, physically, and emotionally while participating alongside peers in a structured and supportive environment.”

“Our district is proud to provide inclusive opportunities that reflect the strength and diversity of our student body,” said Brent Mitchell, Interim Superintendent of Schools for DeSoto ISD. “This competition is not only about athletics, but about community, connection, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to shine.”

Community members are encouraged to attend and show their support as students demonstrate their skills and school pride. The event will open to the public at 9 am with a 9:30 am opening ceremony slated to feature several district student groups including DeSoto High School cheer, color guard, drumline, and the Eaglettes.
