During the Tuesday, May 26, 2026, regular monthly business meeting, the DeSoto Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of Nicke Smith as the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for DeSoto High School, ushering in a new era of leadership for one of Texas’ premier high school basketball programs.
Smith brings nearly three decades of coaching experience, including 19 years as a head coach, along with a championship pedigree and a longstanding reputation for developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
“Coach Smith is a proven leader who understands what it takes to build and sustain excellence,” said DeSoto ISD Interim Superintendent of Schools Brent S. Mitchell. “His commitment to student development, academic accountability, discipline, and championship culture makes him an outstanding fit for DeSoto High School and our athletic program.”
Over the course of his distinguished career, Smith has compiled an impressive 431–192 overall record while leading programs known for toughness, discipline, player development, and competitive success. His teams have earned three UIL State Championships in 2023, 2025, and 2026, while making five state tournament appearances over the last six seasons and reaching eight total state championship games.
Most recently, Smith served as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Dallas ISD’s Justin F. Kimball High School, where he elevated the program into a perennial state powerhouse and one of the most respected basketball programs in Texas. Prior to his tenure at Kimball, he spent eight successful seasons leading L.G. Pinkston High School, guiding the program to multiple playoff appearances and a regional finals appearance.
Beyond championships and accolades, Smith has made a lasting impact through mentorship and student success. Throughout his career, he has helped more than 82 student-athletes earn collegiate scholarships, including multiple NCAA Division I players and McDonald’s All-Americans. Several former players have gone on to professional basketball careers, including NBA standouts Acie Law IV, Tony Mitchell, and Jawun Evans.
A graduate of Wiley College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Smith has remained deeply committed to mentoring young men academically, athletically, and personally. He also co-founded the Dallas Showtyme AAU program and created the Unsigned Senior Showcase, helping student-athletes gain exposure and scholarship opportunities at the next level.
Smith’s accomplishments have earned statewide and regional recognition, including multiple Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year honors, Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year, Prairie View Interscholastic Coach of the Year, and multiple District Coach of the Year awards.
Smith, now, brings his leadership, energy, and championship vision to DeSoto High School as he prepares to lead the next chapter of Eagles basketball.
“I am honored and excited for the opportunity to join DeSoto ISD and lead the DeSoto Eagles basketball program,” said Smith. “DeSoto has a rich tradition of excellence, tremendous community support, and outstanding student-athletes. I look forward to building strong relationships, continuing the winning tradition, and helping develop young men who will succeed both on and off the court.”
Smith will officially assume his role ahead of the 2026–2027 academic and athletic season.
