DeSoto Independent School District is proud to recognize Speech-Language-Hearing Month this May, reaffirming the district’s commitment to creating responsive, inclusive learning environments that support the communication needs of all scholars and their families.

Observed nationwide, Speech-Language-Hearing Month raises awareness about communication disorders and highlights the critical role speech-language pathologists and audiologists play in helping individuals achieve success in school and beyond. Through the leadership of the district’s Special Education Department, DeSoto ISD continues to ensure that students receive high-quality, individualized services that remove barriers to learning and foster academic and social growth.

“In DeSoto ISD, we are intentional about building systems that support the whole child,” said DeSoto ISD Director of Special Education Services Demetra Miller. “Our teams work collaboratively to identify and address communication needs early, providing targeted interventions and responsive services that empower students to fully engage in their learning environments.”

The district’s Special Education Department provides comprehensive evaluations, individualized education plans, and ongoing speech-language services tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. These services are delivered in partnership with families, educators, and specialists to ensure a cohesive approach to student success.

Early identification remains a key priority. Families and educators are encouraged to be aware of developmental milestones and potential signs of speech or language delays in young children, including limited verbal expression, difficulty understanding language, or challenges forming clear speech. Addressing these needs early can significantly improve long-term outcomes.

Research consistently shows that early intervention:

  • Supports kindergarten readiness and long-term academic achievement

Beyond direct services, DeSoto ISD emphasizes collaboration and capacity-building across campuses. “Our work extends beyond compliance to truly creating inclusive spaces where every student can thrive,” Jsaid DeSoto ISD Executive Director of Special Populations Stephanie Fuller. “By partnering with families and staff, we are building a culture of awareness, support, and advocacy that benefits our entire school community.”
