DeSoto Independent School District proudly joins schools across the nation in celebrating National School Counselors Week, recognizing the critical role school counselors play in supporting students’ academic success, postsecondary readiness, and social-emotional development.

School counselors are essential partners in student achievement, helping scholars navigate academic pathways, plan for college and careers, and develop the skills needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Their work supports the whole child and strengthens the connection between learning, well-being, and future success.

“School counselors are at the heart of student advocacy and opportunity,” said Dr. Anita Perry, DeSoto ISD Executive Director of Counseling and CCMR. “Their daily work ensures students are not only academically prepared, but also emotionally supported and equipped to make informed decisions about their futures. This week gives us an opportunity to celebrate the expertise, care, and impact counselors bring to our schools every day.”

Through individualized guidance, small-group support, and schoolwide programming, DeSoto ISD counselors help students set goals, overcome challenges, and build confidence as they progress toward graduation and beyond.

“Our counselors are key leaders in advancing academic growth and college, career, and military readiness,” said Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer. “They collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and families to remove barriers to learning and ensure every student has access to the guidance and resources needed to succeed.”

National School Counselors Week also highlights the role counselors play in fostering safe, inclusive learning environments where students feel seen, supported, and empowered.

“Education is about more than instruction. It is about relationships, support, and opportunity,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools. “Our school counselors exemplify that mission by guiding students academically, socially, and emotionally. We are grateful for their commitment to our scholars and for the positive impact they make across our district.”

DeSoto ISD encourages families, students, and staff to take time this week to thank and recognize school counselors for their dedication, leadership, and unwavering support of student success.
