DeSoto Independent School District is proud to announce the
expansion of its Honors Mathematics Pathway at the middle school level for the
2025–2026 academic year, reinforcing the district’s mission to ensure that all
scholars achieve at the highest levels possible.
The enhanced sixth-grade honors math pathway is designed to
challenge high-achieving students with an accelerated, rigorous curriculum that
strengthens foundational skills in advanced mathematics. This initiative is
aimed at better preparing students for high school STEM opportunities,
including advanced math courses and dual-credit college pathways, as well as
future readiness for college, the workforce, or military service.
In alignment with Texas House Bill 2124, this honors pathway
serves students who rank in the top 40% of the district's fifth-grade class,
based on specific academic performance indicators demonstrating excellence in
mathematics. Students accepted into the program will engage in coursework that
puts them on track to complete Algebra I in eighth grade, one year ahead of the
traditional schedule. This acceleration opens the door to high school-level
courses such as Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus, with opportunities to
earn college credit before graduation.
All middle school campuses in DeSoto ISD that serve sixth
and seventh grades will offer this advanced math opportunity. Students entering
seventh grade who successfully completed sixth-grade honors math will
automatically continue along the honors track as part of their academic
progression.
To ensure students are ready for the honors-level work, all
incoming sixth-grade scholars must complete a summer math packet and submit it
to their campus honors pathway teacher by August 18, 2025. Rising
seventh-grade honors students are also required to complete and return the
summer packet for their grade level by the same deadline.
