DeSoto Independent School District proudly celebrated Black Children’s Book Week (BCBW) across campuses districtwide, engaging scholars in the power of storytelling, literacy, and cultural representation through meaningful reading experiences and community partnerships.

Black Children’s Book Week is a nationally recognized observance dedicated to celebrating Black authors, illustrators, and stories, while promoting literacy and encouraging positive self-identity among children. The initiative highlights the importance of diverse literature in helping students see themselves reflected in texts, broadening perspectives, and fostering empathy, inclusion, and understanding.

Held during Black History Month, the observance carries special cultural significance, reinforcing historical awareness while connecting past achievements to contemporary voices and narratives. Throughout the week, students across DeSoto ISD were exposed to a wide range of culturally relevant books that celebrate heritage, identity, resilience, innovation, and imagination.

Campuses across the district welcomed guest readers from throughout the community, creating memorable experiences that strengthened school-community connections. Notable readers included City of DeSoto Mayor Rachel ProctorMayor Pro Tem Crystal Chism, district alumnae, local leaders, educators, and community advocates — all of whom volunteered their time to share stories, spark curiosity, and inspire a love of reading among students.

“Black Children’s Book Week provides our scholars with mirrors and windows — opportunities to see themselves in stories while also learning about the experiences of others,” said KJTMA Principal Yolanda Hanspard. “The enthusiastic participation of our community leaders and alumni underscores the collective commitment to literacy, representation, and student success in DeSoto ISD.”

Through interactive read-alouds, classroom discussions, literacy activities, and curated book selections, students explored diverse characters, authors, and themes that reinforced the district’s commitment to inclusive learning environments and academic excellence. DeSoto ISD remains dedicated to promoting literacy, cultural awareness, and student engagement through experiences that connect classrooms, families, and community partners in meaningful ways.
