DeSoto High School Girls Flag Football Team Makes History as District Champions, Heads to State
DeSoto ISD is proud to celebrate a historic milestone for its athletics program as the DeSoto High School Girls Flag Football Team has been crowned District Champions in their inaugural season. The team’s accomplishment marks a significant achievement for DeSoto ISD and sets the stage for a legacy of spirited competition, excellence, and opportunity for female athletes in the district.
The district title comes as part of a rapidly expanding DFW Girls Flag Football League, an initiative powered by the Dallas Cowboys, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation, and the NFL Foundation. Launched in 2022 with Fort Worth ISD, the league has grown to include nearly 100 high schools across North Texas, providing girls with competitive opportunities, skill development, and potential pathways to college scholarships and even Olympic participation.
“Winning the district championship in our first season speaks to the heart, grit, and determination of these young women,” said Coach Briana Stanley, Head Coach of the DHS Girls Flag Football Team. “They’ve trained hard, grown as athletes and teammates, and are now inspiring a new generation of girls to believe in their power on and off the field.”
The team will now head to the State Tournament, hosted at The Star located at 1 Cowboys Way, Frisco, TX, with the tournament bracket to be released Friday, May 16, 2025. For those unable to attend in person, the games will be streamed live at TexasLive.com.
“Girls flag football is more than a sport—it’s an opportunity for young women to lead, compete, and thrive,” said Claude Mathis, DeSoto ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. “Coach Stanley and her team are making history, and I couldn’t be more proud of what this means for the future of athletics in DeSoto. They’ve laid the groundwork for a lasting program that will open doors for countless student-athletes to come.”
Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools, praised the team’s achievement and the importance of expanding athletic opportunities for girls in the district:
“This team exemplifies what the DeSoto ISD Triple-A Experience is all about—excellence in Academics, Arts, and Athletics. These student-athletes have not only brought home a district championship, but they’ve also made history and opened a new chapter for girls’ sports in our community. We are so proud of their hard work, discipline, and commitment. As they head to the state tournament, we stand behind them with Eagle pride. Go Lady Eagles!”
