Board to Host Town Hall for Facilities Naming

DeSoto Independent School District invites its school community to participate in a community conversation regarding proposed names for district facilities. The open, public town hall will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024, in the boardroom at the DeSoto ISD Instructional Support Center located at 200 E. Belt Line Road in DeSoto, TX.

 

Trustees, in accordance with CW Local Policy, are seeking to obtain feedback from community members regarding naming proposals. The naming process as outlined in board policy includes completing and submitting the facility naming proposal form; community review, feedback, and board approval.

The upcoming Nov. 4. Town Hall meeting will serve as a means for the community to discuss and provide feedback for the Trustees to consider pertaining to the recommendations for naming submitted as outlined in the policy.

 

Naming proposals for the following individuals were submitted:

Kathy Goad

Goad served for 29 years as a classroom teacher and was named Teacher of the Year during her tenure of service. Goad would later go on to serve as a PALS director who received state awards and honors as a ‘Top 5” program in Texas. Goad, then, served as program director for the DeSoto ISD WINGS program for over-aged and under-credited students seeking a high school diploma. Following her retirement as a long-serving DeSoto ISD educator, Goad went on to serve as a member of the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees for six years. During her tenure as a board member, Goad was appointed to an officer role by her peers. Goad was inducted into the DeSoto ISD Hall of Honor in 2014 as a result of her service and contributions to the DeSoto ISD school community.

 

Sharon R. Sternes

Mrs. Sharon Sternes served as PTA President, Football & Basketball Booster Club Member, and Board Member for nine years, including a term as President in 2010–11. One of Mrs. Sternes’ most significant contributions was her relentless advocacy for rigorous academics. Mrs. Sternes recognized the importance of ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, had access to challenging and enriching educational opportunities. Her efforts in this area improved not just academic excellence but also promoted equity, fairness, and opportunity for all.

 

The open forum is an opportunity for community members to offer feedback on proposed recommendations for district facilities.

Following the November 4 Town Hall, the next step in this process will pertain to Board approval.
