The DeSoto Independent School District School Board unanimously approved the renaming of two district facilities as the inaugural process for facilities naming came to a close with this action during the February 21, 2025, school board meeting.

The two  names approved are as follows:

  • Kathy Goad, former Desoto ISD employee and long-serving school board trustee, is recommended for the DeSoto Alternative Education Program facility.

  •  Sharon R. Sternes, former school board trustee and noted educational advocate for rigorous academics and post-secondary readiness, is recommended for the district’s collegiate academy.

The naming recommendations recognize the contributions of both Goad and Sternes to the district’s educational community.

Ryan Sternes, son of Sharon R. Sternes, expressed deep gratitude for the motion. “(...) happy, thankful, really words, can't express how I feel inside at this moment. Forever, a lifelong DeSoto resident, my mom dedicated so much to the DeSoto community, and to just be able to receive this honor on her behalf, to have my family's last name memorialized in this way, I couldn't ask for anything better.”

Larry Goad, longtime DeSoto ISD educator and coach and husband of former Trustee Goad, said “A very high honor and one my wife was well-deserving of, having served this district since 1985 putting children first and foremost. This is a way of remembering what she has done for this school district and this community. She implemented a lot of programs that are still in effect today and that have positively changed a lot of children’s lives.”

The recent approvals were the first in the district’s newly implemented facilities’ naming process which included a town hall to discuss and announce submissions and board action to review and consider the submissions prior to affirming the assignment of submitted names in the process to district facilities and will undergo cyclical review with new nominations on an annual basis.
