Lawrence "Larry" Davis is a distinguished and dedicated leader whose work in education has had a profound impact on DeSoto ISD. With over 25 years of educational administrative experience, Davis has been instrumental in shaping policies, fostering student success, and promoting equity across the district. His unwavering commitment to students, educators, and the broader community has solidified his legacy as a transformative leader in DeSoto ISD.
In 2022, Davis was inducted into DeSoto ISD’s Hall of Honor for Distinguished Service alongside Pamela Dawson and Karen Pittmon and Alumni Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Tiffany Clark.
To his credit, Beth Wright, who nominated Davis for consideration to the Hall of Honor, wrote “What I liked most about Larry was his ability to talk to anyone about anything. He talked to parents about yucky things their kid(s) had done in class or in the halls. He talked to kids who needed discipline or maybe a hug, or he just listened when they just needed someone to hear them. He knew every student in the building by name and usually knew the parent(s), and oftentimes, he knew their phone number by heart.”
“Larry was always available to his teachers, and he emphasized the importance of our own families. I have seen him cover (and teach) classes for teachers who needed to leave campus to pick up a sick child. I have seen him provide meals and snacks for students as well as employees who didn’t get a chance or have the means to eat. I have seen him stay late with students who hadn’t been picked up after school or at an event. I have seen him take students home if a parent had car trouble or was running late from work. I can’t think of a time I ever heard him say a negative word to anyone or show any signs of frustration toward anyone, even when it would have been justified!”
Davis’s extensive career spans multiple leadership roles, including his current position as Director of Human Capital Management, where he oversees the hiring and development of campus personnel. Prior to this, he served as an associate principal, director of athletics, and executive director of human resources, among other roles.
Below, is a detailed outline of Davis's roles and contributions over the course of his storied career in DeSoto ISD:
DeSoto ISD and DeSoto Community Roles:
His work has directly influenced the district’s operational efficiency, student support systems, and professional development initiatives for educators.
As one of the first African American administrators in DeSoto ISD, Davis has been a trailblazer, ensuring that students from all backgrounds receive the resources and opportunities needed to succeed.
Throughout his tenure, Davis has championed programs that foster academic achievement, cultural inclusivity, and leadership development. His time as Director of Athletics saw DeSoto ISD earn multiple state championships and UIL medals, while his leadership in human resources helped shape hiring practices that prioritize excellence and equity.
His impact extends beyond the classroom—he has mentored countless students and staff, advocating for their growth and professional success.
Reflecting on his career and the significance of Black History Month, Davis shares, “I am so honored to be recognized, and especially to be recognized during Black History Month. Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the past and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans. It is also a time for us to continue to walk in the footsteps of those who worked so hard to give us the opportunities we have and remain focused on providing even more opportunities for those who come after us. I have greatly enjoyed working for DeSoto schools, as evidenced by the fact that I have worked here for 34 years as a teacher, coach, principal, and administrator. I was one of the first African American administrators in the district. I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from so many talented people, and to see so many students accomplish great things. I hope that I have inspired the students and people I worked with to achieve their goals.”
Beyond his work in education, Davis is actively involved in civic and professional organizations, including the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators, the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, and the City of DeSoto’s youth sports organizations.
His contributions have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the DeSoto ISD Hall of Honor Distinguished Service Award, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus Outstanding Texan Award, and the City of DeSoto Community Partner Award.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Larry Davis’s career stands as a testament to the power of educational leadership and its lasting impact on communities. His dedication to fostering a culture of academic excellence, equity, and student success continues to inspire future generations of educators, leaders, and advocates for change. Davis’s legacy is one of service, empowerment, and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of education.
