DeSoto ISD and Higher Ed Entity Partner to Launch Para-to-Teacher Program to Strengthen Teacher Pipeline
DeSoto Independent School District’s Board of Trustees approved an memorandum of understanding in support of a strategic partnership with an area higher education partner during the August 25, 2025, board meeting to launch a Paraprofessional-to-Teacher (Para-to-Teacher) program, creating a clear and supported pathway for district paraprofessionals to earn teaching credentials while remaining invested in their home schools. This initiative addresses ongoing teacher shortages by cultivating highly qualified educators who are already committed to DeSoto ISD students and the local community.
“This program allows us to invest in the talent already within our district, helping our paraprofessionals advance their careers while addressing critical teacher shortages,” said Larry Davis, Director of Human Capital Management, DeSoto ISD. “By providing structured support, mentorship, and academic guidance, we are equipping our future teachers to succeed in the classroom from day one.”
Under the agreement, at least ten current DeSoto ISD paraprofessionals will have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching through an area community college program which includes a residency year, during which participants will co-teach and co-plan instruction under the guidance of a mentor teacher, gradually assuming full classroom responsibilities.
Dr. Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer, DeSoto ISD, added, “The Para-to-Teacher pathway aligns perfectly with our commitment to student success. Educators who are deeply familiar with our schools and students are uniquely positioned to continue building strong relationships while delivering high-quality instruction.”
Candidates will also participate in structured professional development, coaching, and clinical assignments to ensure they develop the pedagogical and practical skills required for highly effective teaching.
The agreement also outlines collaborative responsibilities, including mentor selection, cohort placement, structured release time for coursework, and integration of clinical assignments. Both DISD and Dallas College will work together to ensure participants receive a supportive and rigorous learning experience designed to produce highly effective, certified teachers ready to lead in high-need classrooms.
Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools, DeSoto ISD, emphasized the district’s broader vision: “This partnership exemplifies the Triple A Experience—investing in Academics, Arts, and Athletics begins with ensuring our classrooms have the highest-quality teachers. By creating career pathways for our paraprofessionals, we strengthen our schools, empower our staff, and support student achievement across DeSoto ISD.”
