In a celebration honoring leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to student success, DeSoto Independent School District proudly recognized Demitree L. Tatum, Principal of Woodridge Fine Arts and Gifted Academy, as the 2026 Principal of the Year during the May 15 Cadence of Celebration gala themed “Putting on the Ritz: An Ode to Employee Excellence.”

The annual district event celebrates outstanding educators and leaders through milestone service awards, retiree recognitions, Teacher of the Year honors, and Administrative Leaders of the Year acknowledgements.

Tatum was honored for her exceptional instructional leadership and her dedication to creating a vibrant, student-centered campus where academic rigor and creativity thrive side by side. With more than 25 years of experience in education, she has built a career grounded in excellence, innovation, and a deep commitment to student achievement.

As principal of Woodridge Fine Arts and Gifted Academy, Tatum leads a dynamic learning environment that integrates rigorous academics with fine arts and gifted programming. Under her leadership, the campus has cultivated a culture where students are encouraged to think critically, express creativity, and excel across disciplines.

Her leadership approach emphasizes the intentional integration of technology, data-driven instruction, and high-quality teaching practices to support continuous improvement and student success. She is widely recognized for fostering a school culture that empowers both educators and learners to reach their highest potential.

Prior to serving as principal, Tatum held multiple campus leadership roles including assistant principal, instructional specialist, and instructional coach. In these positions, she supported educator development, facilitated professional learning, and helped design curriculum and assessment systems aligned to student needs. Her early experience as a classroom teacher continues to inform her grounded, practical approach to leadership.

Tatum holds a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from the University of North Texas. She is certified as a PK–12 Principal and in Gifted and Talented education and has completed extensive training in instructional leadership, teacher appraisal systems, and early literacy development.

A collaborative and visionary leader, Tatum remains committed to empowering educators, engaging families, and ensuring all students are prepared to succeed in an ever-evolving world.
