As the 2025–2026 school year comes to a close, DeSoto Independent School District (ISD) will implement a no-backpack policy for all secondary students (grades 6–12), effective Monday, May 11, 2026. The measure applies to all middle and high school campuses and is part of the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment during the final weeks of school.

Under the policy, backpacks will not be permitted on campus for the remainder of the school year. Students will be allowed to carry small, clear, hand-held, or clutch-style bags for essential personal items, such as hygiene products. Any student who brings a backpack to campus will be required to return it home, as campuses will not provide storage.

District officials note that the policy is a proactive safety measure commonly used during high-traffic periods, including the end of the school year. Additional precautions may also be in place during this time, such as increased security presence, limited hallway movement, and adjusted schedules to support a smooth transition into summer break.

“We appreciate the cooperation of our students, families, and staff as we implement this measure,” district leadership shared. “Maintaining a safe and focused environment remains our top priority as we finish the school year strong.”

The district has communicated expectations to staff to ensure consistent implementation across all campuses. Families are encouraged to review the guidelines with their students and contact their campus directly with any questions or concerns.
