DeSoto Independent School District will host its “Pathways to Success” Academic Signing Day for the second year on Wednesday, April 29, celebrating eighth-grade students as they take an active step toward their high school academic futures at DeSoto High School. The event is a collaboration between the district’s Career and Technical Education team and the College Driven GEAR UP grant program that supports college and career readiness and access for this cohort of scholars through the grant’s scope expansion.

Modeled after collegiate athletic signing ceremonies, the event will provide incoming ninth-grade students—members of the Class of 2030—the opportunity to formally commit to their selected academic pathways. Students will sign a mock letter of intent representing their chosen program of study, including Career and Technical Education (CTE), JROTC, Collegiate Programs, Fine Arts, and Advanced Academics.

The event is designed to build excitement and ownership around the transition from middle school to high school while reinforcing the district’s commitment to College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR).

“This event is about helping students see themselves in their future,” said DeSoto ISD Director of Career and Technical Education Melinda Pugh. “When students make intentional choices about their pathways early, they are more engaged, more focused, and better prepared to take advantage of the opportunities available to them in high school and beyond.”

The program will begin with a celebratory welcome featuring the DeSoto High School drumline, followed by a presentation of colors by JROTC cadets, student performances from choir and dance, and motivational messages from student leaders. The ceremony will culminate in two signing sessions, where students from McCowan Middle School, Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy, and West Middle School will formally commit to their selected academic pathways.

In addition to the ceremony, the event will showcase student visual artwork in the lobby and bring together district leaders, counselors, and program directors to support students and families in this milestone moment.

“Academic Signing Day reflects our belief that every student deserves a clear and supported pathway to success,” said DeSoto ISD Executive Director of CCMR and Counseling Services Dr. Anita Perry. “By aligning student interests with intentional program selection, we are strengthening engagement, increasing postsecondary readiness, and ensuring students are equipped to achieve their goals.”

The initiative also highlights the district’s collaborative approach, bringing together multiple departments and programs to provide a unified, student-centered experience. From Advanced Academics to Fine Arts and CTE to JROTC, students are empowered to explore and commit to pathways that align with their talents, interests, and long-term aspirations.

“This is a powerful moment for our students,” said DeSoto High School Principal Dr. Leon Darden. “We are not just welcoming them to high school; we are affirming their potential and setting the expectation that their choices today will shape their success tomorrow. Academic Signing Day creates a sense of pride, purpose, and belonging from day one.”

Transportation will be provided for participating middle school students, with campuses coordinating logistics and parent permissions. Students will be grouped by academic pathway, reinforcing their connection to future programs and peers as they prepare to enter high school.

Through events like “Pathways to Success,” DeSoto ISD continues to innovate in how it supports student transitions, ensuring that every scholar is equipped with a clear vision and a strong start on their journey toward college, career, and military readiness.
