Students across the Dallas/Fort Worth area recently participated in a language and cultural exposure opportunity during the Region 10 Spanish Spelling Bee. DeSoto ISD’s Emergent Bilingual (EB) students in grades 3–8 competed against peers from districts throughout the Region 10 Education Service Center area, demonstrating impressive bilingual academic skills.
“The Spanish Spelling Bees are an opportunity for our students to build confidence, practice public speaking, and think and perform under pressure,” said Carminia Moreno, Emergent Bilingual Director, DeSoto ISD.
DeSoto ISD was proudly represented by students from Frank Moates Elementary:
- 3rd Grade Winner: Leily Alvarado Guerrero
- 4th/5th Grade Winner: Danna Camila Meza
- 3rd Grade Runner-Up: Ania Resendiz
- 4th/5th Grade Runner-Up: Santiago Salinas
These students advanced to the Region 10 Spanish Spelling Bee, held on Wednesday, March 25, at the Richardson Independent School District Administration Building, where they competed against scholars from across the region. The competition required participants to submit written responses that accurately included specialized accents and punctuation marks unique to the Spanish language, highlighting the students’ precision and mastery of linguistic details.
“Our students represented DeSoto ISD with excellence and pride,” said Ana Coca, Instructional Facilitator, DeSoto ISD. “Participating in regional competitions like this allows our Emergent Bilingual scholars to develop both academic and interpersonal skills, while celebrating the beauty and complexity of the Spanish language.”
The district congratulates all students who participated and looks forward to continuing to support Emergent Bilingual learners in achieving academic excellence while embracing their language and culture.
