DeSoto Independent School District Interim Superintendent Brent Mitchell is calling on the entire DeSoto community to rally behind students as they prepare for upcoming STAAR assessments through a districtwide letter-writing campaign designed to uplift, motivate, and inspire.

As thousands of DeSoto ISD students in grades 3–12 prepare for testing, the district is inviting families, community members, and partners to write handwritten letters of encouragement to remind students that they are supported and capable of success.

“We know that a few sincere words can make a lasting impact on a child’s confidence,” said Mitchell. “This initiative is about surrounding our students with encouragement and reminding them that they are not alone; this entire community is standing behind them.”

The campaign encourages participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including families and friends, city leaders, local businesses, faith-based organizations, PTA groups, alumni, and community organizations. Supporters are encouraged to gather their networks inclusing coworkers, congregations, and civic groups to write messages that affirm students’ abilities and resilience.

“Our students are prepared, and they have worked hard all year,” Mitchell added. “Now it’s our turn as a community to pour into them and help them walk into each test feeling confident, supported, and ready to soar.”

To ensure messages are meaningful and age-appropriate, letter writers are asked to tailor their notes for three grade bands: grades 3–5, grades 6–8, and grades 9–12.

Letters can be dropped off or mailed to the DeSoto ISD Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 200 E. Belt Line Road, DeSoto, TX 75115, or submitted electronically via email at [email protected]. The deadline to submit letters is April 2, with distribution to campuses scheduled for April 7.

Through this initiative, DeSoto ISD aims to fill classrooms and campuses with messages of encouragement during STAAR season, reinforcing the district’s commitment to supporting the whole child both academically and emotionally.

“When our students feel seen, supported, and valued, they perform at their best,” said Mitchell. “Let’s show every Eagle that they have a village cheering them on.”
