For generations of students, the first science dissection has marked a milestone — a moment of curiosity, wonder, and discovery that transforms textbook diagrams into real-life understanding. At Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy (KJTMA), that timeless learning experience is thriving in today’s modern classrooms, as students recently participated in an immersive sheep heart dissection lab that brought anatomy and physiology vividly to life.

During the 45-minute guided learning experience, students in grades 6–12 worked collaboratively in pairs to examine the structure and function of a mammalian heart, tracing how oxygen, nutrients, and hormones travel throughout the body. The hands-on investigation fostered critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and teamwork — skills essential for success in both academic and real-world settings.

Aligned to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, the lesson reinforced Organisms and Environments 7.13Aand Anatomy and Physiology AP.14A and AP.14C. Notably, TEKS 7.13A is a tested standard on the Grade 8 Science STAAR assessment, making the experience both engaging and academically purposeful.

To extend learning beyond the lab table, students also explored The Whynauts – Episode 2: The Human Body, a multimedia resource that deepened understanding of human systems and strengthened conceptual connections.

“Hands-on experiences like this ignite curiosity and build lasting understanding,” said Dr. Raisha Allen, DeSoto ISD STEM Coordinator. “By blending traditional science milestones with modern instructional strategies, we help students connect learning to real-world application and future careers.”

While this learning experience was not funded through the Educate Texas grant, it closely aligns with the district’s broader commitment to high-impact STEM instruction, experiential learning, and academic excellenceKatherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy continues to cultivate innovative, student-centered learning environments that empower scholars to explore, question, and discover — one heartbeat at a time.
