DeSoto Independent School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) students demonstrated the power of service-based learning through a meaningful contribution to the district’s Superintendent’s Toy Drive on Friday, December 12, 2025.

Students enrolled in the Education & Training CTE pathway at DeSoto High School donated toys to support the annual districtwide initiative, with donations collected at the DeSoto ISD Instructional Services Center (ISC). The activity extended beyond charitable giving, serving as an authentic instructional experience aligned to students’ career preparation.

As part of the initiative, each student selected a toy connected to one of the district’s CTE pathways and prepared a classroom presentation explaining the toy’s educational value and developmental benefits. Students articulated how their chosen items could support learning, creativity, and growth in children, reinforcing concepts related to child development, instructional planning, and educational impact.

“This project exemplifies what high-quality CTE instruction looks like—intentional, relevant, and grounded in real-world application,” said Melinda Pugh, DeSoto ISD Director of Career and Technical Education. “Our Education & Training students not only gave back to their community, but they also demonstrated their understanding of how learning tools can positively influence child development.”

The initiative was led by Rachel Bolden, CTE Education & Training teacher at DeSoto High School, who emphasized the importance of connecting coursework to meaningful community engagement.

“Our goal was for students to see that teaching and learning extend beyond the classroom,” said Bolden. “By thoughtfully selecting toys and explaining their developmental benefits, students were able to apply what they’ve learned while contributing to a cause that brings joy to children and families during the holiday season.”

District leaders praised the students for their professionalism, thoughtfulness, and commitment to service, noting that experiences like this help prepare scholars for future careers in education and related fields.
