DeSoto Independent School District is excited to announce the launch of the Frank Moates Afterschool Girls STEM Program, designed to engage and inspire young girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The program will kick off on Monday, November 3, 2025, and will take place every Monday after school at Frank Moates Elementary.

“The goal of this program is to open doors for girls in STEM and help them see the exciting possibilities that these fields offer,” said Raisha Allen, DeSoto ISD STEM Coordinator. “Through practical, engaging activities, we hope to spark curiosity and build confidence that lasts well beyond the classroom.”

The program offers interactive, hands-on experiences that make STEM fun and accessible. Participants will engage in activities such as building straw bridges, spaghetti towers, balloon rockets, and other engineering challenges. Students will also have opportunities to enjoy special camp incentives to reinforce learning and celebrate their achievements.

Principal David Parham emphasized, “Frank Moates Elementary is committed to creating opportunities where our students, especially young girls, can explore and develop their passions. This program is a wonderful way for students to build critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork skills while having fun.”

Families and students are encouraged to participate in this enriching program. On November 17, 2025, media and district staff will visit to capture photos and showcase the exciting STEM activities happening at Frank Moates Elementary.

DeSoto ISD Chief Academic Officer Stephanie McCloud added, “Initiatives like this reflect our district’s commitment to preparing students for the careers of the future. By encouraging girls to engage in STEM early, we are empowering the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.”

The Frank Moates Afterschool Girls STEM Program aligns with DeSoto ISD’s mission to increase the number of girls interested in STEM careers and provide meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for future success.
